Upcoming Shows & Dances

Every 2nd
Sunday

Every Second Sunday, 2–5pm Travis Marina Bar & Grill, formerly the Presidio Yacht Club, $10 donation at the door. Dance under the Golden Gate Bridge. And generally there are various saddlepals dropping by to sit in with us. No club anywhere can boast of a more spectacular setting.

“Fiddle Ray can play anything!” —Barbara Dane
“Rock and Roll? Why, man, that's the same kind of music we've been playin' since 1928!… We didn’t call it rock and roll back when we introduced it as our style back in 1928, and we don’t call it rock and roll the way we play it now. But it’s just basic rhythm and has gone by a lot of different names in my time. It’s the same, whether you just follow a drum beat like in Africa or surround it with a lot of instruments. The rhythm’s what’s important.” —Bob Wills

Friday, January 31, Terrace Room, on Lake Merritt, Oakland CA 7–10pm Admission is free, but we highly recommend their fine vittles, and tipping the band!

Yes, we are back at the Terrace Room, <http://www.theterraceroom.com/go/>, a beautiful venue overlooking Lake Merritt. If you haven’t yet been there, it’s a real treat, with dining and dancing in an amazing glassed-in panorama overlooking Lake Merritt. It’s an Art Deco treasure, built in 1927, and many features, including the impressive original tilework, have been preserved. The band thinks playing there is a real fun, because the acoustics are just fantastic. The Retrobates are truly blessed to play dances in two of the most visually spectacular clubs in the Bay Area.

Click here and enter your location for a map and directions.

On hand will be Boogie Sonka, Ray Green, Emily Bonn and Dale Alstrom, with Fiddle Ray Landsberg on ...hmm. But our piece de resistance is our rhythm section. As Dizzy Gilespie said "The audience is] not particular about whether you’re playing a flatted 5th or a ruptured 129th as long as they can dance to it." -- and our rhythm section, consisting of John Tuttle socking that archtop, Michael Price on doghouse bass, and Pete Lind flogging those skins, our rhythm section is the Best in The West.

If you have already been to our dances, we don’t have to sell you anything; we know we’ll be seeing you from time to time. But if you haven’t-- well you should come down and see what all the excitement is about. We guarantee you'll be back for more.

Dec 31, 2018
The Travis Marina Bar & Grill, formerly the Presidio Yacht Club, is on the Sausalito side of the bridge, and boasts the undisputed best panorama of San Francisco Bay. The Retrobates are returning by popular demand for their eighth year. Their dance crowd is always looking forward to the event-- just about the most fun you can have with both feet on the floor.

The ticket price includes-- besides the most breathtaking view any Bay Area club can brag about-- complimentary champagne at midnight, helium cow balloons-- and despite frivolously Korny Kowboy decor, the Retrobates are nothing short of the best swing dance band around. If you hop outside at midnight, you can see the fireworks across the Bay in San Francisco.

The Retrobates include Western Swing Hall-of-Famer Mylos "Boogie" Sonka on pedal steel and vocals, Emily Bonn and trumpeter Ray Green on big-band vocalizin', "Fairfax Sax" veteran Dale Alstrom on tenor sax and clarinet, Fiddle Ray Landsberg on you can guess what, John Tuttle on guitar, piano, accordion and vocal harmony, and the new kid in the corral, veteran Michael Price on doghouse bass. Pete Lind, the best in the West, will be flogging the skins.

October
2016
Friday, October 14, Terrace Room, on Lake Merritt, Oakland, 7–10pm. Admission is free. We are back at the Terrace Room, a beautiful venue overlooking Lake Merritt. Chanteuse Sylvia Herold will be with us for another fun dance…

If you haven't yet heard Sylvia’s stylish vocals and guitar work in the Retrobates’ mix, you are in for a real treat. And if you haven't yet been to The Terrace Room, it's a spectacularly beautiful venue, with fine dining and dancing set in a beautiful art deco treasure built in 1927. The band loves playing there, not just because Count Basie and the big boys all played this venue back in the day, but because the acoustics are just fantastic. The Retrobates are truly blessed to play regular dances in two of the most visually spectacular clubs in the Bay Area. Click to see a Google Map, and enter your location for directions. Admission is free, but dinner and tipping are strongly encouraged!

Thursday, October 27, Ashkenaz, Berkeley. Doors open 6:30. The Retrobates have been attracting an East Bay dance crowd over at the Terrace Room. Now Ashkenaz is featuring us as part of their Fall Swing Series. We're tickled to join Steve Lucky, Lavay Smith, and our pal Mitch Woods on the Ashkenaz swing dance roster. Click to see details on the Askenaz website.

Here’s the blurb they wrote about us:

Doors open 6:30
Dance Lesson 7:00
Retrobates’ Downbeat 8:00
Admission $15 at the door; series discount available

The Lone Star Retrobates bring some of the best Western swing extant to tonight’s edition of “Swing in the Fall,” Ashkenaz’s two-month series of swing dances with lessons taking place every Thursday in October and November. “Swing in the Fall” covers the gamut from classic big band sounds to jump blues and New Orleans R&B. Discounted series passes are available. The series concludes with a Saturday night party with Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers on November 26!

Each night starts at 7 pm with a choice of beginning/intermediate dance lessons with Karen & Michael or a guest teacher (included in the ticket price), followed by the evening’s live band at 8 pm. Click here for more about all dance lessons, teachers, and performances in the series!

This may be the Ashkenaz debut of the Lone Star Retrobates, but since 1990 or earlier, some version of the Retrobates has existed (check the band’s website for famous alumni from Billy Wilson to Tony Marcus). The current Western swing big band is, by its own admission, “a boot-scootin’ wingtips-flyin’ dance band specializing in authentic West Coast Swing. If jazz is America’s musical taproot, then this roadhouse-swing fusion is its west-facing branch.” Some of the members are leaders of their own bands; some have played with the likes of Bob and/or Billy Jack Wills, Bill Monroe, Ray Price, and others. They bring authenticity and excitement to such classic tunes as “Mood Indigo” and “Smoke, Smoke, Smoke that Cigarette.”

Featuring trumpet, sax, twin fiddles, both standard and pedal steel guitars, drums, and standup bass, rich four and five-part vocal harmonies and even trick yodeling on demand, the Retrobates sashay from hot swing to honky-tonk. With a freshly retooled show featuring a kicking all-star horn section—each horn man a bandleader in his own right—the Retrobates are making a stir in the Bay Area alt-country and retro-roots scene, this night featuring ace chanteuse Sylvia Herald, swing veteran Mylos “Boogie” Sonka on pedal steel, and big-band vocalist and trumpeter Ray Green, saxophonist Dale Alstrom, fiddler Ray Landsberg, bassist Michael Price, and drummer Pete Lind.
